Lessons Learned from a Difficult Year
We can likely all agree that 2020 was an extraordinary year. The good that can come out of the past 12 months is the knowledge gained from our experiences. Here’s what we learned.
Nimbleness Ensures Survival. The keyword that emerged as companies and individuals worked through change after change was “pivot.” Those who have survived and even thrived during hard times are those who were able to reassess, realign, and discover a new path to reach goals.
People Always Find Ways to Connect. Video conference meetings. Virtual happy hours. Socially distant outdoor meetups. No matter the barriers, human beings will always find ways to reach out and link up, proving we are never truly alone.
There’s Strength in Service. Soon after the pandemic began, thoughts naturally turned to identifying means to help. Blood drives, food banks, and free tutoring for virtual learners were just some of the ways we learned to come together and support one another.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Are No Longer Optional. Whether the country, a community, or a company, true success cannot occur when people from marginalized communities are missing from the table and varied voices are unheard. And once those presences and perspectives come together, there must be a safe environment for authenticity and equitable opportunity.
The time has come to stop mourning the year that could have been, and to learn from the year that was. O.K., students. Class dismissed.
