In November, we celebrate and recognize the rich culture, traditions and contributions of Native Americans.
The first American Indian Day was celebrated in May 1916 in New York, culminating an effort by Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, who rode across the nation on horseback seeking approval from 24 state governments to have a day to honor American Indians. In 1990, more than seven decades later, then-President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating the month of November “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations have been issued every year since 1994 to recognize what is now called National Native American Heritage Month.
With over 570 nationally recognized tribes in the United States and eight tribes (Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Odawa (Ottawa) Fox, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sauk, and Oneida) who have called Milwaukee their home, Athena encourages you to learn and educate others so that we ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.
There are multiple ways to center Native American culture in November:
- Learn about the tribal land that you are living on
- Read books written by Indigenous authors
- Watch a documentary
- Make an Indigenous American recipe

PR Tip: Enhance your online presence
With technology changing the way businesses run, building an online presence is essential to capture the attention of new and existing customers. Entrepreneur shares some key tips on how to do so:
- Use search engine optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a digital marketing strategy for increasing your brand’s visibility in search results. As your website ranks higher in search results, more people will come across your brand. To optimize your site for SEO, you should invest in finding the most relevant keywords. Afterward, use the keywords appropriately and naturally in your headers, meta description, blog content and social media posts.
- Focus on only the most important online platforms
You can explore numerous platforms when it comes to boosting the image of your business online. However, you must be careful, as being present on several platforms may not be advantageous to your brand because it takes substantial time and resources. Choose wisely. If you can only maximize the use of your website, emails and three social media platforms, you should concentrate on them.
- Post shareable and emotional content consistently
Another way to improve your online presence is to post content your audience can share with friends and family. When they do so, you reach more people, thus boosting your online presence. However, most people only share content that resonates with them emotionally. Incorporate impactful phrases and words into your headers, captions and blog posts. Add exciting images, videos and stats. Then, encourage your readers to share your post.
Overall, technology offers incredible opportunities for businesses to connect with customers and reach others. By implementing these strategies, your business online presence will grow to capture the right audience and help with business success.
